DESCRIPTIONS OF LEVELS OF WORK

Level I: Assistant Tree Surgeon

Employees at this level perform routine work in connection with the care, preservation, and treatment of trees and shrubs. They work under direct supervision from a designated supervisor.

A(n) Assistant Tree Surgeon typically -

  1. assists in general tree maintenance utilizing current industry standards, including trimming, feeding, spraying, cabling, and injection of trees;
  2. climbs trees using climbing techniques and specialized equipment to access work areas;
  3. assists in tree removals;
  4. prunes and transplants trees and shrubs;
  5. supervises employees as assigned;
  6. performs related duties as assigned.

Level II: Tree Surgeon

Employees at this level assist in and are responsible for the care, preservation, and treatment of trees and shrubs. They work under general supervision from a designated supervisor.

A(n) Tree Surgeon typically -

  1. assists in and is responsible for tree maintenance, utilizing current industry standards, including trimming, feeding, spraying, cabling, and injection of trees;
  2. climbs trees using climbing techniques and specialized equipment to access work areas;
  3. treats cavities;
  4. is responsible for tree removals;
  5. inspects trees and shrubs for insects and diseases and provides the necessary treatment;
  6. prunes and transplants trees and shrubs;
  7. supervises employee(s) or assistants;
  8. performs related duties as assigned.

Level 1: Assistant Tree Surgeon

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  1. Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience in a professional environment or in a nursery involving the maintenance of trees, shrubs, and gardens.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  1. Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment to be used.
  2. Knowledge of safe practices and willingness and ability to follow them.
  3. Ability to follow instructions.
  4. Agility.
  5. Equipment Maintenance – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  6. Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions.
  7. Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  8. Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  9. Equipment Selection – Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  10. Repairing – Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  11. Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  12. Control Precision – The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  1. Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience in a professional environment or a nursery involving the maintenance of trees, shrubs, and gardens.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a professional environment or a nursery involving significant responsibility with the maintenance of trees, shrubs, and gardens.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  1. Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment to be used.
  2. Knowledge of insects and plant life diseases and methods to control them.
  3. Knowledge of safe practices and willingness and ability to follow them.
  4. Knowledge and use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  5. Supervisory ability.
  6. Ability to follow instructions.
  7. Agility.
  8. Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
