Job Description

The Academic Support Specialist assists the Coordinator, Senior Coordinator, and Associate Director of University College in the development and delivery of specific University College/Visor Center/Developmental Math services including: academic coaching and peer mentor training, hiring, supervision and training of student employees and graduate assistants, outreach efforts to students served by the Visor Center and Developmental Math, budget planning, data collections for assessing various programs, and various Center/Developmental Math details such as scheduling of tutoring, courses and workshops, tutoring wait list and data collection.

The Academic Support Specialist must work without considerable supervision to achieve the effective administration and development of the goals of University College Academic Services/Support. These goals are determined by the Specialist, Coordinator and the Associate Director of University College in coordination with other University College units. Regular meetings and regular contact with Associate Director of University College are expected and should contribute to the achievement of the goals of University College Academic Services/Support and the goals of University College. Evidence of a positive professional demeanor that contributes to a positive and fulfilling work environment.


1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling three years (36 months), from the categories below:

A) College course work in any field
- 60 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months)
- 90 semester hours equals 2 years (24 months)
- 120 semester hours or more equals 3 years (36 months)

B) Progressively more responsible work experience in supervising, organizing, coordinating or other significant work with specific educational or administrative program initiatives.

3. If this position is Security Sensitive or if you are subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy, employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation. You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.
