Job Description

The International Student and Scholar Advisor serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) within the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) unit and is responsible for advising international students and scholars on immigration-related issues.

Training in F/J visa advising will be provided to new professionals.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree conferred prior to position start date
One year (12 months) of relevant training and/or work experience.
Note: Master's or equivalent degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for this experience. Master’s degree must be conferred prior to start date.
Demonstrated evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact in a culturally inclusive and respectful manner.
Keen attention to detail with demonstrated evidence of the ability to consistently achieve thoroughness and accuracy when completing tasks.
Ability to meet Designated School Official (DSO) requirements, as federally regulated by the Department of Homeland Security. Preferred Qualifications
Experience serving as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to research, analyze, interpret, and synthesize complex information from a variety of sources.
Excellent computer skills.
Experience with Terra Dotta (ISSS Student software) and PeopleSoft or similar campus database system(s).
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to independently set priorities, coordinate, and complete a variety of competing tasks within established deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team with interdependent workflows.
Ability to handle sensitive information and data, use proper discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
Strong customer service skills, with the ability to work with faculty, administrators, admissions staff, students, and individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.


Salary

$44,000 - $46,000 annual, combined with an excellent benefit package

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. The active register for this classification will be voided when the position is filled.

If hired, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days from the start date for this position.
