Job Description

This position operates under the directives of the University editorial and visual standards manuals and works closely with the Associate Director for Strategic Communications to plan, develop, and implement marketing strategies for the University with an emphasis on those related to print and online communications. Responsible for the proper execution and integrity of online communication pieces. Also works with writers, editors, photographers, and production staff to ensure desired outcome of final project. This position also is responsible for interviewing individuals and writing feature stories used across external university publications and social media platforms to reach specific audiences that include alumni, retirees, prospective students and their families, donors, and friends.
The position deals with a variety of members of the campus community.

This position works closely with the Editorial director, Associate Director, and Social Media Coordinators to produce online communications for flagship channels. As a key member of the editorial and online communications team, this position oversees various aspects of the News system, including University Marketing and Communications News blog. Additionally, this position maintains editorial consistency through extensive editing of projects that are completed within University Marketing and Communications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in communications or a closely related field.
2. Three (3) years of full-time or part-time equivalent professional level experience in communications, journalism, or writing related fields that must have included feature writing and copy editing.
3. Ability to provide strategic leadership to help unify online communications across campus.
4. Strong feature writing and copy-editing skills.
5. Familiarity with Associated Press style.
5. Demonstrated copyediting and proofing skills.
6. Ability to develop communications plans for social media and online publications.
7. Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to manage staff and students.
8. Demonstrated ability to lead long-term multimedia projects.
9. Ability to work within a committee structure and in partnership with multiple clients/offices on any given project.
10. Ability to take and edit photos.
11. Experience with social media posting and monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Self-starting independent self-manager.
2. Experience leading and editing an online or print publication.
3. Familiarity with Google Analytics.
4. Master's degree in communications, journalism, or a related field.
5. Demonstrated ability to manage staff and students.
6. Experience using a WordPress content management system.


Salary

$60,000 - $67,000 annual, commensurate with experience

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. The active register for this classification will be voided when the position is filled.

Illinois State University is authorized to do business within the State of Illinois. All work under this appointment is required to be performed from within the State of Illinois. If hired, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days from the start date for this position. Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois driver’s license or a valid State of Illinois ID card.
